Stable Bleaching Powder 34% Grade 1: 34% Chlorine
Formula: Ca(OCl)₂

Stable Bleaching Powder

Calcium Hypochlorite 34% (ISI Grade 1)

Stable Bleaching Powder (SBP) is a widely used solid disinfectant and oxidizing agent. It is a mixture of Calcium Hypochlorite and Calcium Chloride. Ruvon supplies Grade 1 Quality with a minimum of 34% available chlorine, ensuring potent germicidal action for water treatment, aquaculture, and sanitation.

CAS Number 7778-54-3
Available Chlorine 34.0% Min
Form White Powder

Product Overview

Unlike liquid bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) which degrades quickly, Stable Bleaching Powder (SBP) retains its chlorine content for a long period if stored correctly. It releases nascent oxygen and chlorine when dissolved in water, which acts as a powerful oxidizer to kill bacteria, viruses, and algae.

  • High Potency: 1 kg of SBP contains as much chlorine as 3-4 liters of standard liquid bleach.
  • Cost Effective: The most economical method for mass chlorination of water supplies.
  • Multi-Purpose: Used for bleaching textiles, sanitizing floors, and treating aquaculture ponds.

Mechanism: The Chemistry of HOCl

How does it Kill Germs?

When Calcium Hypochlorite dissolves in water, it hydrolyzes to form Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl).

  • The Penetrator: HOCl is electrically neutral (no charge). Because bacterial cell walls are negatively charged, they repel charged ions (like OCl-). However, neutral HOCl penetrates the cell wall easily.
  • Oxidation: Once inside, it oxidizes the bacteria's enzymes and DNA, killing it instantly. This is why "Available Chlorine" matters—it determines how much HOCl is generated.

Industrial Applications

Water Treatment

Municipal water supply chlorination to kill cholera, typhoid, and dysentery bacteria.

Aquaculture

Sanitizing shrimp and fish ponds before stocking to remove predators and pathogens.

Textile Bleaching

Used for bleaching cotton, linen, and jute to achieve high whiteness before dyeing.

Sanitation

Disinfection of hospital floors, toilets, drains, and sewage disposal lines.

Paper Industry

Used for bleaching paper pulp to remove lignin and improve brightness.

Swimming Pools

Shock treatment for pools to control algae and bacteria.

Packaging Options

25 KG HDPE Bags

Laminated bags with inner liner to prevent chlorine gas leakage.

50 KG HDPE/MS Drums

Rigid drums for safer transport and long-term storage.

Safety & Handling Protocols

DANGER: Oxidizer & Corrosive

Chlorine gas is toxic. Handle with extreme care.

  • Incompatibility: NEVER mix with acids (like toilet cleaner) or ammonia. This releases deadly chlorine gas immediately.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from heat, oil, and grease (fire hazard).
  • PPE: Wear gas mask/respirator, rubber gloves, and eye protection.
