Food & Tech Grades
Sodium Metabisulphite (SMBS) is a powerful inorganic compound that acts as a reducing agent, preservative, and antioxidant. It prevents oxidation and bacterial growth by releasing Sulfur Dioxide ($SO_2$) in a controlled manner. Ruvon supplies both High Purity Food Grade (for shrimp/wine) and Technical Grade (for mining/water treatment).
SMBS appears as a white to slightly yellowish crystalline powder with a faint odor of sulfur dioxide. It dissolves easily in water to form Sodium Bisulfite.
Comparing Food Grade (E223) vs. Technical Grade.
| Parameter | Food Grade (E223) | Technical Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Assay (as Na₂S₂O₅) | 97.0% Min | 96.0% Min |
| Sulfur Dioxide ($SO_2$) | 65.0% Min | 64.0% Min |
| Iron (Fe) | Max 0.001% (10 ppm) | Max 0.003% (30 ppm) |
| Heavy Metals (Pb) | Max 5 ppm | Max 20 ppm |
| Arsenic (As) | Max 1 ppm | Max 3 ppm |
| pH (5% Solution) | 4.0 - 4.6 | 4.0 - 4.8 |
SMBS works by chemically consuming oxygen or chlorine.
Prevents melanosis (blackening) in shrimp and prawns during freezing and export.
Used to sanitize equipment and prevent oxidation/spoilage of wine.
Essential dechlorination agent to protect Polyamide RO membranes from oxidation.
Used for detoxification of cyanide waste water (INCO/SO2 Air process).
Ingredient in developing solutions to protect developer agents from oxidation.
Antichlor: Removes excess chlorine after bleaching cotton or wool.
With LDPE liner to prevent oxidation. Standard packing.
For large water treatment and mining operations.
Contact with acids releases toxic Sulfur Dioxide gas.
Available in Food Grade (E223) and Tech Grade. Fresh stock guaranteed.
