Sodium Hydrosulphite 88% Hydros 88% (Textile Grade)
Formula: Na₂S₂O₄

Sodium Hydrosulphite

Also known as Sodium Dithionite / Hydros

Sodium Hydrosulphite is a powerful, white crystalline reducing agent with a slight sulfur odor. It is the gold standard for reductive bleaching in the textile and paper industries. Ruvon supplies premium 88% purity grade, ensuring rapid oxygen removal and efficient dyeing of VAT dyes (Indigo) for denim.

CAS Number 7775-14-6
Purity 85% / 88%
Solubility Very Soluble

Product Overview

Sodium Hydrosulphite is chemically unstable in the presence of moisture and air, which is why we supply it in tightly sealed iron drums. Its primary function is to remove oxygen, which makes it ideal for preventing oxidation or reversing colors.

  • Indigo Reduction: Essential for solubilizing indigo dye in denim manufacturing.
  • Textile Stripping: Powerfully removes color from dyed fabrics to correct dyeing errors.
  • Pulp Bleaching: Brightens mechanical wood pulp (paper) by chemically reducing lignin chromophores without damaging the fiber strength.

Mechanism: How Denim gets its Blue?

The "Leuco" Transformation

Indigo dye (used for Jeans) is naturally insoluble in water (like a stone). It cannot enter the cotton fiber.

  • Reduction: When Sodium Hydrosulphite is added to the dye bath, it strips oxygen from the Indigo molecule. This converts it into a water-soluble form called "Leuco Indigo" (which is actually yellow/green).
  • Penetration & Oxidation: The Leuco dye enters the cotton fiber. When the fabric is pulled out of the bath and hits the air, oxygen reacts with it, turning it back into insoluble Blue Indigo, trapping the color inside the fiber forever.

Industrial Applications

Textile (VAT Dyeing)

Crucial for dyeing cotton with Indigo and VAT dyes. Ensures deep, uniform penetration.

Textile Stripping

Reductive clearing agent to remove unfixed dyes or strip color from faulty batches.

Paper & Pulp

Bleaches mechanical pulps (newspaper/magazines) to high brightness without degrading yield.

Kaolin Clay

Bleaches Kaolin (China Clay) by reducing red iron oxide contaminants to colorless forms for white ceramics.

Chemical Synthesis

Used as a reducing agent in organic synthesis and purification processes.

Sugar Refining

Sometimes used for bleaching sugar syrup (Food grade required).

Packaging Options

50 KG MS (Iron) Drums

Mandatory. Air-tight metal drums with double inner liners to prevent moisture ingress.

Palletized Shipping

Drums are strapped to pallets for safe handling.

Safety & Handling Protocols

Fire Hazard

Hydros decomposes exothermically (releases heat) if exposed to moisture/air.

  • Keep Dry: Never let water enter the drum. Even humid air can trigger a reaction.
  • Fire Fighting: Do NOT use small amounts of water. If a drum heats up, flood with massive amounts of water to cool it down.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse separate from acids and oxidizers.
