Propylene Glycol

Monopropylene Glycol (MPG)

Propylene Glycol is a colorless, nearly odorless, viscous liquid with a faintly sweet taste. It is hygroscopic (attracts water) and miscible with water, acetone, and chloroform. Ruvon supplies both USP Grade (for Food/Pharma/Cosmetics) and Technical Grade (for Industrial/Coolant use).

Product Overview

PG is a diol (alcohol with two hydroxyl groups). Its versatility lies in its non-toxicity (USP grade) and its ability to lower the freezing point of water.

  • Safe Antifreeze: Unlike Ethylene Glycol (which is toxic), PG is non-toxic and used in food processing cooling systems.
  • Solvent Power: Excellent solvent for flavors, fragrances, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
  • Moisture Retention: Acts as a humectant in cosmetics, preventing creams and lotions from drying out.

The Science: Water Magnet & Ice Breaker

How does PG work?

Propylene Glycol is chemically a "small" molecule with two -OH (Hydroxyl) groups.

  • The Humectant Effect: These -OH groups act like magnets for water. They form hydrogen bonds with water molecules in the air, pulling moisture into the skin or food product to keep it soft and hydrated.
  • The Antifreeze Effect: When mixed with water, PG molecules get in between water molecules, preventing them from organizing into ice crystals. This lowers the freezing point significantly, protecting pipes from bursting in winter.

Industrial Applications

Pharmaceuticals (USP)

Solvent for oral, injectable, and topical drugs. Carrier for active ingredients.

Food & Beverage (USP)

E1520 additive. Solvent for food colorings and flavorings. Humectant in baked goods.

Cosmetics (USP)

Moisturizer in creams, lotions, shampoos, and baby wipes. Replaces glycerin for a lighter feel.

Heat Transfer Fluids (Tech)

Non-toxic antifreeze for HVAC systems, chillers, and solar water heating systems.

UPR Resins (Tech)

Raw material for producing Unsaturated Polyester Resins (Fiberglass) and Alkyd paints.

De-icing Fluids (Tech)

Used to de-ice aircraft wings and runways due to its low freezing point.

Safety & Handling Protocols

USP Grade Safety

Propylene Glycol USP is generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

  • Toxicity: Very low toxicity. Safe for indirect food contact.
  • Storage: Hygroscopic. Keep containers tightly closed to prevent moisture absorption from the air.
  • Tech Grade Warning: Technical grade should NOT be used in food, pharma, or electronic cigarette applications due to potential impurities.
