Maleic Anhydride Briquettes Briquette Form / 99.5%
Formula: C₄H₂O₃

Maleic Anhydride

MAN (Briquettes & Molten)

Maleic Anhydride is a versatile organic intermediate. It is the acid anhydride of maleic acid. Ruvon supplies premium quality Briquettes (compact, low-dust form), which are preferred over flakes for ease of handling. It is the primary raw material for Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR) and 1,4-Butanediol (BDO).

CAS Number 108-31-6
Purity 99.5% Min
Melting Point 52.8°C

Product Overview

Maleic Anhydride is chemically extremely reactive. It contains two functional groups: the double bond and the anhydride group. This makes it ideal for polymerization and copolymerization reactions.

  • Low Iron Content: Crucial for producing clear, non-yellowing resins.
  • Briquette Advantage: Unlike flakes which break easily into dust (inhalation hazard), briquettes are compressed tablets that maintain shape and flow easily in hoppers.
  • Fast Melting: Uniform size ensures consistent melting rates in resin reactors.

Mechanism: The Backbone of UPR

How does it make Fiberglass Strong?

Maleic Anhydride provides the Unsaturation (Double Bond) in Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR).

  • Cross-Linking: When UPR is mixed with styrene (monomer), the double bonds in Maleic Anhydride open up and link chains together (Cross-linking). This turns liquid resin into a hard, durable solid used in boat hulls and tanks.
  • Hydrolysis Warning: MAN loves water. Even moisture in the air converts it into Maleic Acid ($C_4H_4O_4$). Acid has a higher melting point (130°C) and clogs reactors. Keep bags sealed!

Industrial Applications

UPR Resins

Production of fiberglass composites for boats, pipes, tanks, and automotive parts.

Lubricant Additives

Used to make ashless dispersants (succinimides) that keep engines clean and extend oil life.

Alkyd Resins

Used in manufacturing paints and coatings to improve drying time and hardness.

Food Acidulants

Raw material for synthesizing Malic Acid and Fumaric Acid used in beverages and candies.

Biodegradable Plastics

Precursor for PBS (Polybutylene Succinate) and BDO (Butanediol).

Agrochemicals

Intermediate for making pesticides like Malathion and plant growth regulators.

Packaging Options

25 KG PE/PP Bags

Multi-layer moisture-proof bags. Standard packing for briquettes.

Molten ISO Tank

Bulk supply in heated tanks (Liquid state > 60°C) for large resin plants.

Safety & Handling Protocols

Corrosive Solid

Maleic Anhydride is corrosive to skin and eyes.

  • Inhalation: Dust is extremely irritating to the respiratory tract. Use dust masks/respirators.
  • Contact: Upon contact with skin moisture, it forms acid and causes burns. Wear gloves and long sleeves.
  • Eyes: Can cause severe damage. Use safety goggles. Wash immediately with water if exposed.
