Acid Red 18 Powder Brilliant Scarlet / C.I. 16255
Classification: Monoazo Acid Dye

Acid Red 18

Ponceau 4R (Technical/Industrial Grade)

Acid Red 18 (also known as Ponceau 4R or Brilliant Scarlet) is a highly soluble synthetic azo dye. It produces a vibrant, strawberry-red to scarlet shade. While famous as a food color (E124), our technical grade is optimized for the textile industry (Wool/Nylon dyeing) and home care formulations due to its exceptional stability in acidic environments.

C.I. Number 16255
CAS Number 2611-82-7
Solubility 140 g/l (Excellent)

Product Overview

Acid Red 18 is an anionic dye that is applied from an acidic bath. It is renowned for its leveling properties, meaning it spreads evenly across the fabric without patchiness. It is chemically stable, light-fast, and compatible with various other acid dyes for shade matching.

  • High Tinctorial Strength: A small amount of dye produces deep, rich shades, making it cost-effective.
  • Acid Stability: Unlike many other dyes, it does not degrade in low pH environments, making it perfect for acidic cleaners.
  • Versatility: Used in diverse fields from textile dyeing to leather finishing and chemical formulations.

Mechanism: The Ionic Bond

Why does it stick to Wool & Nylon?

Acid Red 18 contains sulphonic acid groups ($SO_3^-$), which give it a negative charge. Protein fibers like Wool, Silk, and Nylon contain amino groups ($NH_2$).

  • Protonation: In an acidic dye bath, the amino groups on the fiber become protonated ($NH_3^+$).
  • Electrostatic Attraction: The negatively charged dye is strongly attracted to the positively charged fiber, forming a durable Ionic Salt Linkage. This ensures the color stays locked in.

Industrial Applications

Textile Dyeing

Primary dye for Wool, Silk, Nylon, and Polyamide fabrics requiring bright red shades.

Home Care Products

Used to color Toilet Bowl Cleaners (Harpic type), liquid detergents, and hand washes due to acid stability.

Leather Industry

Used for surface dyeing and spray coating of leather goods to achieve vivid scarlet tones.

Inks & Markers

Component in water-based writing inks and felt-tip marker formulations.

Agrochemicals

Used as a seed colorant to identify treated seeds and fertilizers.

Chemical Tracers

Used in water tracing studies due to its high visibility and solubility.

Packaging Options

Safety & Handling Protocols

Handling Guidelines

Acid Red 18 is generally considered low toxicity but is a fine powder.

  • Dust Control: Prevent dust generation. Inhalation of dye dust can cause respiratory sensitization. Use a mask.
  • Skin Contact: Will stain skin red. Wear gloves and protective clothing.
  • Spillage: Sweep up carefully without creating dust. Wash area with water.
