Castor Oil FSG Industrial First Special Grade
Major Component: Ricinoleic Acid (C18:1-OH)

Castor Oil (FSG)

Industrial Grade / BSS Grade

Castor Oil FSG is produced by refining commercial grade castor oil through bleaching and filtering. It is a pale yellow, viscous, non-drying oil. It is unique among vegetable oils due to its high content of Ricinoleic Acid (~87%), which gives it unusual chemical properties like alcohol solubility and high viscosity.

CAS Number 8001-79-4
Appearance Pale Yellow Viscous Liquid
Origin Castor Seeds (India)

Product Overview

FSG Castor Oil is the standard grade for industrial applications. It retains its viscosity at high temperatures and does not freeze easily at low temperatures. It serves as the primary raw material for manufacturing Hydrogenated Castor Oil (HCO), 12-Hydroxy Stearic Acid (12-HSA), and various Sebacic Acid derivatives.

  • High Lubricity: Superior film strength makes it an excellent lubricant for jet engines and racing cars.
  • Reactivity: The hydroxyl group allows chemical modification (esterification, ethoxylation) to create surfactants and polymers.
  • Eco-Friendly: 100% biodegradable and renewable resource.

Mechanism: The Hydroxyl Anomaly

Why is it so thick?

Normal vegetable oils (like Soy or Palm) are non-polar. Castor Oil is different because of one specific feature: the Hydroxyl Group (-OH) on the 12th carbon of Ricinoleic Acid.

  • Hydrogen Bonding: This -OH group creates strong hydrogen bonds between molecules, making Castor Oil unusually viscous (thick) and soluble in alcohol (which other oils are not).
  • Polyurethane Magic: This same -OH group acts as a reaction site for Isocyanates. This makes Castor Oil a "Natural Polyol," essential for making eco-friendly Polyurethane (PU) foams and coatings without using petrochemicals.

Pro-Tip: Viscosity Management

Handling in Winter

Castor Oil is extremely viscous (approx 700-900 cPs at 25°C). In winter, pumping it from ISO tanks or Flexibags can be very slow.
Recommendation: Ensure your storage tanks have heating coils or use pump tracing to maintain a temperature of 30°C-40°C for efficient flow.

Industrial Applications

Polyurethanes (PU)

Used as a Bio-Polyol in the production of PU foams, casting resins, and adhesives.

Lubricants & Greases

Base for high-temperature greases and racing engine oils due to its thermal stability.

Paints & Coatings

Dehydrated Castor Oil (DCO) is used in alkyd resins to provide flexibility and water resistance.

Textile Chemicals

Sulfated Castor Oil (Turkey Red Oil) is used as a wetting agent and dye dispersant.

Chemical Synthesis

Precursor for Sebacic Acid, Undecylenic Acid (antifungal), and Nylon 11.

Cosmetics

Used in lipsticks (for shine) and creams. (Note: Use BP/USP grade for direct pharma use).

Packaging Options

225 KG MS/HDPE Drums

Standard export packing. Epoxy coated drums available.
