Ricinoleic Acid Castor Derivative Commercial / CP Grade
Structure: C₁₈H₃₄O₃

Ricinoleic Acid

Castor Oil Fatty Acid (85% Min Purity)

Ricinoleic Acid is an unsaturated omega-9 fatty acid produced by the hydrolysis of Castor Oil. It is unique due to the presence of a hydroxyl group on the 12th carbon atom. This structure gives it exceptional properties like solubility in alcohol, high viscosity, and bacteriostatic action, making it ideal for disinfectants and transparent soaps.

CAS Number 61788-44-1
Acid Value 175 - 185
Appearance Yellow Viscous Liquid

Product Overview

Unlike other fatty acids (like Oleic or Stearic) which are hydrophobic (hate water), Ricinoleic Acid is more hydrophilic due to its hydroxyl group. This makes it an excellent surfactant and emulsifying agent.

  • Disinfectant Booster: It increases the Phenol Coefficient (killing power) of pine oil and cresylic acid disinfectants.
  • Pigment Dispersion: excellent wetting agent for dispersing pigments in inks and cosmetics.
  • Biodegradable: A green alternative to petroleum-based chemicals in metalworking fluids.

Mechanism: The Transparency Logic

How does it make Soap Transparent?

To make a soap see-through (like Pears), you need to prevent the soap crystals from becoming large and opaque.

  • Crystal Interference: The bulky shape of the Ricinoleic Acid molecule (due to the -OH group "kink") prevents the soap molecules from packing tightly together. It acts like a solvent within the soap structure.
  • Solvent Bridge: It bridges the gap between the water, sugar/alcohol solvents, and the soap solids, maintaining a clear, gel-like solid phase that lets light pass through.

Pro-Tip: Winter Handling

Don't Panic if it Freezes

In winter (below 15°C), Ricinoleic Acid can become cloudy, semi-solid, or form a "slush." This is physically reversible and does not affect quality.
Recommendation: Store drums in a warm room or apply gentle heat (drum heater) to bring it back to a clear liquid state before use to ensure accurate dosing.
