Mono Ethylene Glycol MEG Fiber Grade
Formula: C₂H₆O₂

Mono Ethylene Glycol

MEG (Fiber & Coolant Grade)

Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) is a clear, colorless, odorless, and sweet-tasting liquid. It is a vital ingredient for the production of Polyester Fibers (PSF), PET Resins (Bottles), and Engine Coolants. Ruvon supplies Fiber Grade MEG with ultra-low iron and impurities, ensuring high brightness in textile applications.

CAS Number 107-21-1
Purity 99.9% Min
UV Transmittance High (Fiber Grade)

Product Overview

MEG is a diol (alcohol with two hydroxyl groups). This chemical structure allows it to react with acids to form esters and polymers. Our Fiber Grade MEG is manufactured to strict specifications to prevent discoloration during the high-temperature polymerization process used to make clothes and bottles.

  • Textile Industry: The key building block for Polyester Staple Fiber (PSF) and Filament Yarn (PFY).
  • Packaging: Reacted with PTA to create Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) resin for water and soda bottles.
  • Thermal Fluid: Depresses the freezing point of water, making it the world's most common antifreeze agent.

Mechanism: The Polyester Backbone

How does Liquid become Plastic?

MEG has two "arms" (Hydroxyl groups -OH). Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) has two "hooks" (Carboxyl groups).

  • The Reaction: When heated with a catalyst, the arms of MEG grab the hooks of PTA. They link together in a long, repeating chain.
  • The Result: This chain is Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). If extruded into thin threads, it becomes Polyester Fabric (Your T-shirt). If blown into a mold, it becomes a Plastic Bottle. Purity of MEG is vital; even trace Iron can turn the clear plastic yellow.

Mechanism: Why it stops freezing?

Colligative Properties

Water normally freezes at 0°C. When you add MEG, it interferes with the formation of ice crystals. A 50/50 mixture of Water and MEG doesn't freeze until -37°C. This property protects car engines from bursting in winter and boiling over in summer (it also raises the boiling point to 129°C).

Industrial Applications

Textile Fibers (PSF/PFY)

The primary use globally. Used to make Polyester yarn for clothing, carpets, and upholstery.

PET Resins

Used to manufacture PET chips for beverage bottles, food containers, and films.

Coolants & Antifreeze

Used in automotive radiators and industrial chillers to manage heat transfer.

Alkyd Resins

Used in paints and coatings to improve flexibility and durability.

Humectant

Used in paper, leather, and adhesives to retain moisture and prevent drying.

Gas Dehydration

Used to remove water vapor from natural gas pipelines to prevent corrosion.

Packaging Options

230 KG HDPE/MS Drums

Standard heavy-duty drums. Virgin packing ensures purity.

Bulk Road Tanker

Bulk supply (20-25 MT) for large textile and PET plants.

Safety & Handling Protocols

Handling Precautions

Although it has a high flash point (111°C), precautions are necessary.

  • Hygroscopic: MEG absorbs moisture from the air. Keep tanks nitrogen-blanketed to maintain purity.
  • Spills: Wash with plenty of water. It is biodegradable.
  • PPE: Wear safety goggles and gloves. Avoid mist inhalation.
