Xanthan Gum is a high-molecular-weight biopolymer produced by microbial fermentation (Xanthomonas campestris). It is famous for its unique ability to increase the viscosity of liquids enormously even at very low concentrations. It is the premier additive for Oil & Gas Drilling Fluids and Food Stabilization.

Product Overview

Xanthan Gum acts as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier. It creates a stable gel structure that prevents ingredients from separating (like oil in salad dressing) or solids from settling (like drill cuttings in an oil well).

The "Shear Thinning" Miracle

Pseudoplasticity Explained

Xanthan Gum exhibits extreme Pseudoplasticity (Shear Thinning). This means its viscosity changes based on movement:

  • In Motion (Pumping/Shaking): When force is applied (high shear), it instantly becomes thin and flows like water. This reduces friction in drill pipes or allows ketchup to pour easily.
  • At Rest (Static): As soon as movement stops (low shear), it instantly creates a gel-structure. This suspends heavy drill cuttings in the hole or herbs in a salad dressing preventing them from sinking.
