Barite Powder API 13A API 13A Standard
Formula: BaSO₄ (Barium Sulfate)

Barite Powder

Drilling Grade (Specific Gravity 4.20)

Barite is a dense mineral comprising Barium Sulfate. Ruvon supplies API 13A Section 7 compliant Barite, the primary weighting agent used in drilling fluids. It increases the density of the mud to control formation pressure, stabilize the borehole, and prevent blowouts during oil and gas exploration.

CAS Number 7727-43-7
Specific Gravity 4.10 / 4.20 Min
Grade Drilling (API)

Product Overview

Our Barite is chemically inert, non-abrasive, and has a high specific gravity. It does not react with other drilling fluid additives and does not interfere with magnetic measurements in the borehole.

  • Density Control: Can increase mud weight up to 20 lb/gal (2.40 SG) to counterbalance high formation pressures.
  • Inertness: Insoluble in water and oil, ensuring it remains stable in both Water-Based Muds (WBM) and Oil-Based Muds (OBM).
  • Low Abrasiveness: Soft enough (Mohs hardness ~3) to minimize wear and tear on drilling bits and pumps.

Technical Specifications (API 13A)

Mechanism: The Hydrostatic Shield

How does it stop a blowout?

Drilling allows pressurized gas/oil to try and escape up the hole. To stop this, we fill the hole with "Mud."

  • Hydrostatic Pressure: The weight of the mud column creates downward pressure. Formula: P = 0.052 x Mud Weight x Depth.
  • Barite's Role: Water weighs 8.3 ppg. To fight deep pressures, we need 15+ ppg. Adding Barite increases this weight significantly without making the mud too thick to pump. It acts as a heavy lid on a pressure cooker.

Pro-Tip: Rheology & Barite Sag

Preventing "Sag"

Barite Sag occurs when heavy Barite particles settle down in the well when pumping stops. This can cause stuck pipes or pressure loss.
Solution: Ensure your Barite has the correct particle size distribution (PSD). Too many coarse particles (>75 microns) cause settling. Too many fines (<6 microns) increase viscosity too much (Plastic Viscosity). Our API grade balances this perfectly.

Industrial Applications

Oil & Gas Drilling

90% of global use. Weighting agent for drilling fluids in exploration wells.

Friction Materials

Used as an inert filler in brake linings and clutch pads to increase density and heat resistance.

Paints & Coatings

High-quality filler (Blanc Fixe) for primers and industrial paints. Provides chemical resistance.

Radiation Shielding

Used in high-density concrete for hospitals and nuclear plants to block X-rays and Gamma rays.

Plastics & Rubber

Filler to increase weight and sound-deadening properties in plastics and acoustic foams.

Glass Industry

Used as a flux to lower the melting point and improve clarity in glass manufacturing.

Packaging Options

1.5 MT Jumbo Bags

Standard for offshore/onshore rigs. Bottom discharge for hoppers.

50 KG HDPE Bags

For smaller operations or paint/brake industries.

Safety & Handling Protocols

Non-Toxic Dust

Barium Sulfate is generally insoluble and non-toxic, unlike soluble Barium salts.

  • Inhalation: Prolonged inhalation of dust can cause Baritosis (benign pneumoconiosis). Use dust masks.
  • Environment: Our material is tested for heavy metals (Cd, Hg) to ensure it is safe for marine discharge (Offshore).
