Potassium Chloride KCL Drilling Grade 98% Min Purity
Formula: KCl (Potassium Salt)

Potassium Chloride

Shale Inhibitor & Clay Stabilizer

Potassium Chloride (KCL) is a high-purity inorganic salt used in Water-Based Drilling Muds (WBM). It is the most effective chemical for stabilizing water-sensitive clays (shales). It prevents the clay from swelling and disintegrating, which keeps the borehole stable and prevents pipe sticking.

CAS Number 7447-40-7
Purity (as KCL) 98.0% Min
Application Drilling / Workover

Product Overview

Ruvon supplies premium grade Potassium Chloride (white powder) that dissolves completely in water to form a clear brine. Unlike standard salt (NaCl), the potassium ions in KCL provide superior inhibition against clay hydration.

  • Inhibition: Provides $K^+$ ions that fit into clay lattices, preventing water uptake.
  • Density: Used to prepare clear completion fluids with densities ranging from 1.0 to 1.16 SG (8.3 to 9.7 lb/gal).
  • Solubility: Highly soluble in water, leaving minimal residue to damage the formation.

Mechanism: The "Ion Exchange" Lock

Why Potassium (K), not Sodium (Na)?

Clay minerals have layers with Sodium ions ($Na^+$) in between. Water loves Sodium, so it rushes in, pushing the layers apart (Swelling). This causes the well wall to collapse.

  • The Swap: When you pump KCL mud, the Potassium ions ($K^+$) kick out the Sodium ions.
  • The Perfect Fit: The $K^+$ ion is exactly the right size to fit snugly between the clay layers. It acts like a lock, holding the layers together tightly so water cannot enter. Result: Stable Shale.

Pro-Tip: Corrosion Management

Watch out for Rust

KCL Brines are highly conductive and contain dissolved oxygen, which makes them corrosive to steel drill pipes.
Recommendation: Always treat KCL muds with an Oxygen Scavenger (like Sodium Sulfite) and a Corrosion Inhibitor to protect your expensive rig equipment during long drilling operations.

Industrial Applications

Drilling Fluids

Primary source of potassium for shale inhibition in water-based muds (WBM).

Completion Fluids

Used as a clear, solids-free brine to finish the well without damaging the formation.

Agriculture (MOP)

Known as Muriate of Potash. Essential fertilizer for plant root strength (different grade).

Electroplating

Source of chloride ions in acid zinc plating baths.

De-Icing Agent

Used to melt ice on roads. Safer for vegetation than common salt.

Water Softening

Used in softeners as an alternative to sodium chloride for low-sodium water.

Packaging Options

50 KG HDPE Bags

Standard packing with inner liner to keep powder dry.
