Polyanionic Cellulose (PAC) is a high-purity, water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose. It is the premier fluid loss reducer for Water-Based Muds (WBM). Unlike standard CMC, PAC is designed to perform in harsh environments with high salt concentrations (offshore drilling) and high temperatures without degrading.
PAC is a "Modified Cellulose" that provides excellent filtration control. It creates a thin, tough, and impermeable filter cake on the borehole wall. This stops water from invading the formation and prevents the formation fluids from entering the wellbore.
Comparison of Regular vs. Low Viscosity Grades.
| Parameter | PAC-R (Regular) | PAC-LV (Low Viscosity) |

| Purity | Min 95% | Min 95% |
| Apparent Viscosity (AV) | Min 50 cPs (Thick) | Max 40 cPs (Thin) |
| Fluid Loss (API) | Max 10 ml | Max 16 ml |

Imagine drilling a hole in a sponge. Water leaks everywhere. The rock formation is like that sponge.
CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) is cheaper but fails in salty water.
The PAC Advantage: PAC has a higher Degree of Substitution (DS). This makes it resistant to ions like Calcium and Magnesium found in seawater. If you are drilling offshore or in salt formations, regular CMC will precipitate and fail. PAC keeps working even in saturated brine.
Used in Fresh water, Salt water, and KCL muds to control filtration rates.
Used during well maintenance to prevent damage to the production zone.
Stabilizes the trench walls in civil engineering piling work (bentonite replacement).
Essential for seawater-based muds where salt tolerance is required.
Used to modify the viscosity of hydraulic fracturing fluids.
Lubricates the bit and carries cuttings in trenchless pipeline installation.
Multi-layer paper bags with inner PE liner to prevent moisture absorption.
Shrink-wrapped on pallets for safe handling on rigs.
