Polyanionic Cellulose

PAC-R (Regular) & PAC-LV (Low Viscosity)

Polyanionic Cellulose (PAC) is a high-purity, water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose. It is the premier fluid loss reducer for Water-Based Muds (WBM). Unlike standard CMC, PAC is designed to perform in harsh environments with high salt concentrations (offshore drilling) and high temperatures without degrading.

CAS Number 9004-32-4
Purity 95% Min
Grade R (Viscous) / LV (Thin)

Product Overview

PAC is a "Modified Cellulose" that provides excellent filtration control. It creates a thin, tough, and impermeable filter cake on the borehole wall. This stops water from invading the formation and prevents the formation fluids from entering the wellbore.

  • PAC-R (Regular): Provides both Fluid Loss Control AND Viscosity. Used when you need to thicken the mud to carry cuttings.
  • PAC-LV (Low Viscosity): Provides Fluid Loss Control WITHOUT increasing viscosity. Used in heavy, high-density muds where you don't want the mud to get too thick.
  • Eco-Friendly: Non-toxic and biodegradable, making it safe for environmentally sensitive drilling areas.

Mechanism: The "Impermeable Shield"

What is a Filter Cake?

Imagine drilling a hole in a sponge. Water leaks everywhere. The rock formation is like that sponge.

  • The Layering: PAC molecules are long chains. They lay flat against the borehole wall, plugging the tiny microscopic holes in the rock.
  • Fluid Loss Control: This forms a thin, tough "skin" called a Filter Cake. This skin stops the expensive drilling fluid from escaping into the rock and stops the rock from absorbing water and collapsing.

Pro-Tip: PAC vs CMC

Why spend more on PAC?

CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) is cheaper but fails in salty water.
The PAC Advantage: PAC has a higher Degree of Substitution (DS). This makes it resistant to ions like Calcium and Magnesium found in seawater. If you are drilling offshore or in salt formations, regular CMC will precipitate and fail. PAC keeps working even in saturated brine.

Industrial Applications

Drilling Fluids

Used in Fresh water, Salt water, and KCL muds to control filtration rates.
