Glutaraldehyde 50% Biocide SRB Killer
Formula: C₅H₈O₂

Glutaraldehyde 50%

Oilfield Biocide & Bacterial Inhibitor

Glutaraldehyde 50% is a potent, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. In the oil and gas industry, it is the primary weapon against Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB). By killing these bacteria, it prevents the formation of deadly Hydrogen Sulfide ($H_2S$) gas and stops microbial induced corrosion (MIC) in pipelines.

CAS Number 111-30-8
Concentration 50% Min
Application Biocide / Preservative

Product Overview

Glutaraldehyde is non-oxidizing, meaning it works effectively even in complex brines and drilling muds where chlorine-based killers would fail. It is completely miscible in water and penetrates biofilms to kill hidden bacteria.

  • Rapid Action: Kills 99.9% of bacteria within minutes of contact.
  • Non-Corrosive: Unlike oxidizing biocides, it does not corrode steel pipes at usage concentrations.
  • Biodegradable: It degrades rapidly in the environment, making it environmentally acceptable for offshore discharge (when treated).

Mechanism: The "Cross-Linking" Lock

How does it kill SRB?

Bacteria have cell walls made of proteins and amines. Glutaraldehyde attacks these specific points.

  • The Handcuff: Glutaraldehyde molecules have two reactive ends. One end grabs an amine group on the bacteria's cell wall, and the other end grabs a nearby amine group.
  • Freeze & Die: This creates a "Cross-Link" (like handcuffs). The cell wall becomes rigid and frozen. Nothing can go in or out. The bacteria effectively suffocates and dies instantly. This mechanism prevents bacteria from developing immunity.

Pro-Tip: Preventing "Sour Wells"

The H₂S Threat

If you don't use biocide, SRB bacteria eat the sulfates in the mud and excrete Hydrogen Sulfide ($H_2S$). This gas turns the well "Sour." It is deadly to humans and causes rapid corrosion of steel drill pipes.
Recommendation: Maintain a residual of 50-100 ppm Glutaraldehyde in the drilling mud system to ensure zero bacterial growth.

Industrial Applications

Drilling Fluids

Preserves organic additives (starch, gum) in mud from rotting and prevents souring.

Water Injection

Treated water is injected into wells to push oil out. Biocide prevents clogging of the reservoir rock.

Pipeline Hydrotesting

Added to hydrotest water to prevent MIC (Microbial Induced Corrosion) during pipeline testing.

Hospital Sterilization

Used as a cold sterilant for heat-sensitive surgical instruments (e.g., endoscopes).

Poultry & Farms

Disinfectant for animal housing to kill viruses and bacteria (Bird Flu prevention).

Cooling Towers

Prevents algae and slime growth in industrial water cooling systems.

Packaging Options

220 KG HDPE Drums

Standard UN Approved blue drums for safe transport.

1100 KG IBC Totes

Bulk packing for large oilfield service companies.

Safety & Handling Protocols

Toxic & Sensitizer

Glutaraldehyde is potent. Handle with extreme care.

  • Inhalation: Vapors are irritating to the nose and throat. Use in well-ventilated areas or outdoors.
  • Skin/Eyes: Causes severe burns and eye damage. Can cause allergic skin reaction. Wear full chemical suit and face shield.
  • Deactivation: Spills can be neutralized with Sodium Bisulfite solution.
